Carl Dobsky was born in Victoria, Texas in 1972. He came to the attention of the gallery while studying at Jacob Collins' Water Street Atelier in New York. Prior to that, he studied fine art in both the Ringling School of Art in Florida and in New York, obtaining an MFA from the New York Academy of Art. Dobsky's last solo exhibition with the John Pence Gallery opened in April of 2010, and he continues to show in group exhibitions throughout the year.

Much of Dobsky's inspiration comes from his observations of the people and scenes of downtown San Francisco, where he lives and works. His palette is comprised of accurate, restrained earth tones, and his brushwork is at once highly detailed and expressive.

In his figurative work, an element of grittiness lends his figures a poetic, somber beauty. His subjects are diverse: the city's often overlooked homeless, women in vibrant cultural attire for Dia de los Muertos, and young restless city dwellers, to name a few. Dobsky's figurative works, executed in graphite on paper, are likewise compelling and illustrate his remarkable draftsmanship that is the foundation behind every painting.

His cityscapes offer an accurate glimpse into the aura of the streets. Details, such as the surge of a glowing neon sign, a sidewalk littered with debris, or tangled electric bus wires, come together to create a realistic depiction of contemporary urban life. Often overlooked areas of the city are presented in a manner that adds insight to the commonplace. We recommend Dobsky's original and engaging work to you without reservation. Prices range from $950 to $25,000.
